016.jpg The Gamo Target MTS 1000 Moving Airgun Target System, 3456 x 2304 You can keep your dangly targets, your swingy targets and your pretend fairground duckshoot. Named like something out of Wallace & Gromit, the Gamo Target MTS 1000 Moving Airgun Target System is the one for me. It is specially designed for airgun use to simulate hunting situations with centrefire rifles. With it, I can pretend to shoot moving deer at distances up to 200 yards – but you don’t have to go more than a few feet from this target. Utilising a special motorised four-speed carriage with a buck silhouette, the Gamo Target Deer silhouette travels along 6ft of steel track at speeds replicating the movement of deer walking, feeding or running. The silhouette automatically resets at both ends of the track. But that’s not the clever bit. The clever bit is that each MTS Target System comes with a ballistics and distance chart which tells you the distance to place the target systems to replicate centrefire rifle shooting at 100, 150 and 200 yards. What it comes down to is the size of the target. At about one-sixth the size of a real buck and travelling at about a sixth of the speed in the various settings it offers, it is not so simple that multiply what you are shooting by six. Oh no no no no. Its distance conversion table is far more cunning than that.Gamo assumes a lot. For example, it assumed you will be using a .177 pellet in your air rifle. A .22 pellet alters things somewhat. It expects that .177 pellet to be travelling at one of three muzzle velocities. Then it assumes that the centrefire rifle to which you intend to extrapolate these figures has an “average” muzzle velocity – say around 2,500fps. Anyone shooting with a 4,000fps rifle may have to do their own maths.Since it also assumes that this deer is not so much running as gliding over the grass, let’s let Gamo have its assumptions. This is theatre as well as target shooting. Long winter evenings may be spent fine-tuning the calculations so that this target fits your own set-up perfectly.First of a

You can change from one calibre to another in about two minutes. Don’t be put off by the switch barrel. It shoots 1 1/2in groups at 100 yards, which makes it more than adequate for stalking.The designers took this whole snap-on-snap-off thing to heart. It has a Suhl scope mount that detaches and re-attached easily, too. We put a Hawke Sport HD 3-9x40 scope on it, which was adequate for the two deer Alex had to cull.It is a bolt-action rifle with forward, opposing locking lugs that are manually turned into place as you close the bolt. What is unusual is that the short-uplift bolt is carried within a locking housing that covers the entire receiver. The return is shorter than an ordinary bolt action and a bit fiddly if you are not used to it – but you soon will be. The safety is on the tang, so it’s easily accessible to your thumb. The single-set trigger has a pull that’s both crisp and clean. The spent shell eject is, however, enthusiastic and occasionally took another round with it from the three-shot magazine.Alex liked it for its light weight. It is just 6 1/2lb. The first time you go out, stalking is accompanied so Alex can size you up. You have to be insured (BASC member or similar) and he prefers FAC holders. DSC1 or DSC2 holders are a bonus. There are no trophy fees because he wants you to stick to cull animals.
