A lot of people come in pairs - a husband and wife or father and son. This is the only LANTRA-accredited basic rifle course. Maximum course size is six. In addition, the Atkins have just won a Clubmark award, the British Standard for clubs with junior sections.Based on the format of the NRA range officers course, this course covers firearms law, safety and security, rifles and ammunition, hazard perception, accessories, sighting systems and the anatomy of a rifle. This last part of it was suggested by a firearms officer. Charlie Jacoby finds out what they do with their roe deerUntil I stepped on the mortar bomb, I reckoned I was in a roe stalkers’ paradise. It is a 33,000-acre estate in Wiltshire where hardly anyone goes. Deer are healthy, you will see them regularly as you stalk. The trouble is the high explosives. Happily, this one was a blank. These are the Army ranges on Salisbury Plain.“Don’t touch it,” said Steve Alexander as I bent down to examine it. “That really is the golden rule here,” he continued. “Don’t touch the ordnance.”The bangs don’t drive away the deer. There are hulks of old tanks and troop carriers that the army artillery aims at, so the shelling areas are concentrated. But it is not safe for stalkers to go there except, that is, for the group in Defence Estates charged with managing the deer population on the MoD’s land. They are allowed out during gaps in the shelling.Steve manages the deerstalking on this vast centre of Salisbury Plain. The whole Plain extends to nearly 100,000 acres. Its northern half holds the two Live Impact Areas where the bulk of the deer live. The southern half has the Dry Training Areas and so more disturbance from troop movements.Almost all the deer in the centre are roe. There are occasional muntjac or transit fallow. Muntjac are now creeping in to the western edge of the Plain and both fallow and muntjac are established on the eastern edge.What a wonderful opportunity for officers to enjoy some free jolly old stalking, you might think. But it is not like that. Steve’s job is serious deer management. He enjoys his stalking and he does the job for free but each year he has to come up with a management plan for the Plain based on a census carried out by up to 40 volunteers. He enjoys his stalking and he does the job for free but each year he has to come up with a management plan for the Plain based on a census carried out by up to 40 volunteers. He has a pool of stalkers, all qualified to DSC1 or higher, drawn from all ranks of all services and from the MoD Civil

It is a 33,000-acre estate in Wiltshire where hardly anyone goes. Deer are healthy, you will see them regularly as you stalk. The trouble is the high explosives. Happily, this one was a blank. These are the Army ranges on Salisbury Plain.“Don’t touch it,” said Steve Alexander as I bent down to examine it. “That really is the golden rule here,” he continued. “Don’t touch the ordnance.”The bangs don’t drive away the deer.
