Mike and Shirley Atkins have an airgun range behind their house, a minibus and a centrefire range up in the hills where they live in Rhayader, Mid Wales. They run the Mid Wales Rifle Club and hold basic firearms courses for anyone who has never tried shooting rifles before.They have 35 years of shooting experience each. Mike developed a course 2 1/2 years ago. In February last year he held a seminar with representatives of most Welsh police forces. Their input resulted in the course today. Mike is expecting people in their hundreds every year to do the course. So far, they have been coming from as far as Edinburgh, Essex and Exeter. A lot of people come in pairs - a husband and wife or father and son. This is the only LANTRA-accredited basic rifle course. Maximum course size is six. In addition, the Atkins have just won a Clubmark award, the British Standard for clubs with junior sections.Based on the format of the NRA range officers course, this course covers firearms law, safety and security, rifles and ammunition, hazard perception, accessories, sighting systems and the anatomy of a rifle. This last part of it was suggested by a firearms officer. MWRC sends you a 32-page ringbound book two weeks before your course starts.Mike starts with firearms law and warns that “this is the part that sends people to sleep”. However, he is on his firmest ground here because Mike’s other job is as a lawyer. “The law is the hardest part, and it's the one even the firearms officers found hardest,” he says. “But it is against the law that your actions will be charged.”Most firearms law is badly drafted. 016.jpg The Gamo Target MTS 1000 Moving Airgun Target System, 3456 x 2304 You can keep your dangly targets, your swingy targets and your pretend fairground duckshoot. Named like something out of Wallace & Gromit, the Gamo Target MTS 1000 Moving Airgun Target System is the one for me. It is specially designed for airgun use to simulate hunting situations with centrefire rifles. With it, I can pretend to shoot moving deer at distances up to 200 yards – but you don’t have to go more than a few feet from this target. Utilising a special motorised four-speed carriage with a buck silhouette, the Gamo Target Deer silhouette travels along 6ft of steel track at speeds replicating the movement of deer walking, feeding or running. The silhouette automatically resets at both ends of the track. But that’s not the clever bit. The clever bit is that each MTS Target System comes with a ballistics and distance chart which tells you the distance to place the target systems to replicate centrefire rifle shooting at 100, 150 and 200 yards. What it comes down to is the size of the target. At about one-sixth the size of a real buck and travelling at about a sixth of the speed in the various settings it offers, it is not so simple that multiply what you are shooting by six. Oh no no no no. Its distance conversion table is far more cunning than that.Gamo assumes a lot. For example, it assumed you will be using a .177 pellet in your air rifle. A .22 pellet alters things somewhat. It expects that .177 pellet to be travelling at one of three muzzle velocities. Then it assumes that the centrefire rifle to which you intend to extrapolate these figures has an “average” muzzle velocity – say around 2,500fps. Anyone shooting with a 4,000fps rifle may have to do their own maths.Since it also assumes that this deer is not so much running as gliding over the grass, let’s let Gamo have its assumptions. This is theatre as well as target shooting. Long winter evenings may be spent fine-tuning the calculations so that this target fits your own set-up perfectly.First of a

Kimber’s factory is in New York. One of the company’s boasts is that only raw material goes in through the gates – no parts of a Kimber rifle are contracted out.Fox Firearms is the make’s UK distributor, as well as distributing rifles by Cooper Arms Of Montana, Keppeler target rifles and Hakko scopes. Brian Fox had one shipment from Kimber in 2007 and he is waiting for the second shipment. Charlie Jacoby tries it outIt’s a one day course where you get to learn the basics of firearm ownership, handling and then go to try out shooting on two ranges. Mike and Shirley Atkins have an airgun range behind their house, a minibus and a centrefire range up in the hills where they live in Rhayader, Mid Wales. They run the Mid Wales Rifle Club and hold basic firearms courses for anyone who has never tried shooting rifles before.They have 35 years of shooting experience each. Mike developed a course 2 1/2 years ago. In February last year he held a seminar with representatives of most Welsh police forces. Their input resulted in the course today. Mike is expecting people in their hundreds every year to do the course. So far, they have been coming from as far as Edinburgh, Essex and Exeter. A lot of people come in pairs - a husband and wife or father and son. This is the only LANTRA-accredited basic rifle course. Maximum course size is six. In addition, the Atkins have just won a Clubmark award, the British Standard for clubs with junior sections.Based on the format of the NRA range officers course, this course covers firearms law, safety and security, rifles and ammunition, hazard perception, accessories, sighting systems and the anatomy of a rifle. This last part of it was suggested by a firearms officer. MWRC sends you a 32-page ringbound book two weeks before your course starts.Mike starts with firearms law and warns that “this is the part that sends people to sleep”. However, he is on his firmest ground here because Mike’s other job is as a lawyer. “The law is the hardest part, and it's the one even the firearms officers found hardest,” he says. “But it is against the law that your actions will be charged.”Most firearms law is badly drafted. Fallow deer live in the woodlands which crowd the little valleys that tumble down to the sea. That’s where Andrew Phillips does his stalking – and that’s where his client wants to be today.Stalking with Andrew is Babac Amozandeh – ‘Bob’ for short – who grew up in Iran. His father was in the military under the Shah and Bob learned his shooting there. He now lives in the North-West of England.One of the reasons Sporting Rifle has come along is to see Bob’s rifle in action. It is a little-known make from the USA. He is using a lightweight Kimber .308 with a Hakko Majesty 6x42 scope. Kimber makes pistols and a wide variety of rifles, including the 84M Montana, which weighs just 5lb 2oz, a number of varminters, including extremely heavy barrelled versions and tactical arms for the police. Kimber’s factory is in New York. One of the company’s boasts is that only raw material goes in through the gates – no parts of a Kimber rifle are contracted out.Fox Firearms is the make’s UK distributor, as well as distributing rifles by Cooper Arms Of Montana, Keppeler target rifles and Hakko scopes. Brian Fox had one shipment from Kimber in 2007 and he is waiting for the second shipment. Among rifles Brian has on order include a lightweight rifles for deerstalkers and those heavy-barrelled varminters for foxers.Bob normally uses a Sako .243 with a Swarovski 2-12x50. For his new rifle, he has stuck with Sako ammunition. The make has had a ‘celebrity’ buyer too – St Helens and Great Britain rugby league hooker Kieran Cunningham owns a Kimber.Bob chose the Kimber because of its light weight.
