Malcolm Armstrong came up to a highseat one morning a few seasons ago and found a nest of them. It was a moment for evasive action. “To avoid being stung, I baled out,” he says.Malcolm fell 20ft, passed out and woke up with a broken ankle and his mobile phone in two pieces. First he had to comply with the Firearms Act and retrieve his rifle, which was still in the highseat. Using his knee and one foot, he managed to get up and grab it, then clamber down again. Next he had to comply with animal cruelty legislation. The sun was up by now and his dogs were in his car. He crawled 300 yards down the middle of the ride to let them out. He broke several motoring laws as he drove home with one foot operating clutch, brake and accelerator.“We never used to see hornets here,” he says. “Now I have a nest of them in each highseat once or twice a year.”The summer’s longest day has just been and gone. You know it’s summer because the peas and potatoes lie under water. A 3.30am start gives Malcolm time for a bowl of porridge before reaching his highseat at 4.30am. He is keen to show me the work of both the Lincolnshire Deer Group (LDG) and of the Forestry Commission.Made of wood, it is one of the Forestry Commission’s earlier highseats. The FC has a policy of only using wood from sustainable sources, which made its highseats too expensive. As a result, it now buys galvanised steel highseats – and it purchases them from LDG.Muntjac have been in the area for ten years. “It was two or three years of picking up muntjac slots before I saw one,” says Malcolm. “Then it was only bucks. Organiser Nicholas Elder talks up the good bits about the weekendHeld in September on the beautiful Shropshire estate Loton Park of Sir Michael Leighton Bt, Discover HPRs suffered poor organisation but nothing that cannot be improved. Sir Michael has owned and worked German short haired pointers for more than 30 years and is currently looking at large munsterlanders. As an HPR enthusiast, he was an ideal host as he allowed the whole of his estate to be used for the event as well as providing accommodation at the house for the judges, helpers and me. Sir Michael is also a senior ‘A’ panel judge for HPRs. Alpha Feeds and Sporting Rifle should also be applauded for supporting this event as it was the first of its kind to be run in the United Kingdom. The concept behind the test was to try and incorporate a series of the UK and Continental type disciplines in one event. This entailed a quartering test, a blood tracking test, the first of its kind in the UK, a three minute swim in a river, once gain not done in the UK before and a number of others. The teams who took part in the end were England(the winners), Wales, Ireland Holland and Germany, a team from Slovakia were also invited but unfortunately had to withdraw a week before as one of their members was ill and had to go hospitable which was a shame. The dogs which took part were German Shorthaired pointers, German Wirehaired pointers, Weimaraner, both short and Longhaired, Slovakian Rough haired pointers and a team of Dutch Partridge dogs representing Holland. These on first appearance resembled English Springer Spaniels but on a closer look were very different.However I am now going to concentrate on the blood trail/track part of the competition. This was spread over two days to enable

It lies on and around the Brendon Hills. Somerset is blessed with several evocative ranges of hills. Romantic poets loved the Quantocks, the quarry companies love the Mendips, Exeter commuters the Blackdowns but shooters love the Brendons.In the 60 square miles of land bounded by Wellington, Tiverton, Bampton and Wiveliscombe, you will not find many visitors apart from shooters. The few roads there are don't follow the valleys and most of the signposts, local folk reckon, are still off being melted down to be made into Spitfires.There are some big shoots there but Saturdays are characterised by numerous small farmer syndicates and family days out. One such shoot is Bathealton Court. Until this season, it was a family shoot providing 30-bird days five times a season. Part-time keeper Nathan Hards would put down and bring on 300 birds every season. The estate changed hands recently and the new owners, both keen shooters, have stepped Nathan's work up a gear to give nine days a season of 100+ with two or three rough days.Bathealton still maintains its relaxed family atmosphere. However, Nathan now has his work cut out.To do that work, Nathan has been thinking more carefully about his kit and his methods. What he worked out is not good news for rimfire shooters. There is plenty of the kind of quarry here that rimfire aficionados are used to shooting - such as rabbits and crows - but there are better ways to get into this kind of pest. He will use a .22LR but he has found that, in this kind of country, characterised by streams among small but steep hills and patches of woodland on both the tops and the bottoms, the most effective methods are his .222 foxing rifle, traps and his shotgun.Nathan is no stranger to rifle shooting. Go on the BASC deer management scheme on the island of Arran and that buys you a whole week’s stalking with an unlimited bag limit of some of the most impressive heads in Scotland. And no trophy fees.Arran is the rugby ball-shaped island off Ayrshire. Dubbed “the Highlands in miniature” land here rises from sea level to XXXft Goatfell. It can be tough stalking.BASC leases the sporting rights on the 27,500-acre Forestry Commission land on Arran, which holds around 500 beasts. There are two other large estates on Arran which between them hold 1,700 beasts on open land: Dougreay (Sp?) owned by XXXX and Arran Estates owned by Charlie Forbes (CHECK THIS?). This year, BASC members have to cull 135 of its population, with resident ranger Forestry Commission ranger Bob Logan taking another 15 off Goatfell. The other two estates take around 280 off their land. The island is characterised by the amount of deer fencing protecting everything from large estates to vegetable plots.Bob and Neil Griffiths are BASC’s team on the island, running the programme with radios and mobile phones, driving round and round the island and bringing carcases off the hill on quad bike trailers.BASC runs XX weeks a year for up to16 of its members at a time. They tell Charlie Jacoby what’s different and what’s the same about ‘estate’ stalking in their two countriesA New Zealand elk is huge. Its bodyweight is twice that of the big red stags on the Derbyshire estate where Neville is now hunting. “Comparing elk to red deer is like comparing elephants to caribou,” says Neville. “The first time a hunter walks up to the elk he or she has shot, it’s always the size that amazes.”Neville has bred three of the biggest elk under the SCI scoring system. A big head in the 1970s when he started would score 300+ points. One of Neville’s elk was the first to break the 500 barrier. With it, he won an international competition in the USA in 2000. Neville has hunted big game all over the world but, until now, not in the UK. He came to England in August to meet his British agent Rob Aiken, who offers Neville’s yee-haa-style shooting the South Pacific big five – elk, huge red stags, fallow, Himalayan tahr and chamois in New Zealand – as well as his own, more sedate roe stalking in Scotland and genteel park fallow and reds on a large walled estate near his home in Derbyshire. Together, they are stalking the fallow of the Derbyshire estate.Neville’s shooting also takes place within a perimeter fence. It’s a question of taking a backseat on technology. So we shoot off sticks.And they are always arguing. “I shoot off two sticks,” says Paul. “Peter shoots off three sticks – because he’s older” – which provokes Peter at once, to Paul’s delight. They argue for a minute until honour is even and then it is back to the job in hand.Retired bank manager Peter and builder Paul have some 6,000 acres of permissions across farms in West Somerset. They shoot rabbits with rimfires but also have the firepower for foxes and deer. Paul favours a .22 and a .17HMR for rabbit shooting. Peter uses a .22 and brings his .22-250 in case they have to deal with a fox.“I acquired some of my permissions from my grandfather,” says Paul. “He had shooting rights dating back to the 1980s. I shot my first rabbit with him, aged eight, with a Belgian fold-away .410. Much of the rest of my land I got through recommendations.”Peter and Paul met 20 years ago through a local shooting syndicate. Peter had some ground. Paul says: “I did some deer management for him.”Peter adds: “He did – he shot all my deer.”Then Peter did a supervision order on Paul for a .222 he wanted. Peter’s shooting goes back to the 1950s when he was brought up in Nigeria. He recalls his .22 with iron sights which he used to shoot small game through chair legs on the verandah. Today his .22-250 is a Blaser R93 Luxus with a Nightforce NXS 12-42x56 scope and PES moderator. Paul's is a .22 CZ 452 with a Walther 3-9x56 scope and Soundbiter moderator and his 17HMR is a CZ452, too. Britain has all the best roebuck but the Germans have the best traditions and techniques for shooting them. Admittedly, they do their traditions with the kind of tweeness and attention to detail that ends inevitably in fascism but we have plenty to learn from them.The German ammunition company RUAG, which sells Norma and RWS cartridges among others, keeps a 2,500ha hunting area near its southern German factory. I went there in a party of four English stalkers to shoot roebucks from highseats and stalked along woodland rides. RUAG employs jaegers (stalkers) here to take its own staff and guests out to shoot roe deer. It takes around 150 roe off the mainly wooded areas on the hunting ground, including 40-45 bucks. It also takes 40-45 wild boar a year, including half a dozen keiler (full-grown males). It also sponsors general wildlife management in the district, including dealing with the 20-30 deer RTAs per year on roads through the area.Unlike the UK, where you might expect him to come with triple shooting sticks, RUAG stalker Josef Naegelein carries a fold-up camping stool, a single height-adjustable thumbstick and a cushion with a strap. He and client stalk carefully to a position in the woodland where he reckons there is a good chance of a buck. There he puts out the stool for the shooter to sit on and plants the thumbstick for the shooter to use as a rifle rest. He also issues anti-midge stuff. Then it’s a question of waiting. Every 15 minutes, he will use his Buttolo call to give three or four roe kid peeps. He scans the area with Zeiss 10x56 binoculars.As well as his job as jaeger, Josef is a local carpenter and made many of the 50 highseats on the 2,500ha ground. Charlie Jacoby interviews Roger FrancisRoger Francis, as you can see in the picture, has a slight interest in rimfires. That’s a CZ American .22LR isn’t it? With a 16in barrel? And do my eyes deceive me or has someone taken the time to fit it with a Hogue stock an – did I hear you say – tune the trigger? And would that be a Tasco 2.5-10x42mm Varmint scope aboard it? Yes, Roger has more than a slight interest in rimfires.While other kids Roger’s age liked air rifles and many graduated to centrefires, Roger stuck with rimfires for rabbits and, when he was allowed to, handguns for target shooting. For him, rimfires represent everything that stalking-shooting is about. They are light, manoeuvrable, powerful enough to despatch quarry and even objects of beauty and fun.Roger and his wife Sheila started South Yorkshire Shooting Supplies in 1985. They run it from their farmhouse outside Sheffield where it threatens to spill into every room. It was a handgun specialist but the 1997 handgun ban put paid to that and to 85% of the business. With the arrival of the Internet at about that time, Roger didn’t pull the plug, however. He concentrated his attentions on another side of shooting that interested him – rimfires. His shop is now better known all over the world now as Rimfire Magic.Roger decided to start base his rimfire business at first on the Ruger 10/22 as he felt that this little rifle would replace handguns for many shooters. That turned out to be the case. What he didn’t foresee was the interest these rifles would generate with pest control shooters. Organiser Nicholas Elder talks up the good bits about the weekendHeld in September on the beautiful Shropshire estate Loton Park of Sir Michael Leighton Bt, Discover HPRs suffered poor organisation but nothing that cannot be improved. Sir Michael has owned and worked German short haired pointers for more than 30 years and is currently looking at large munsterlanders. As an HPR enthusiast, he was an ideal host as he allowed the whole of his estate to be used for the event as well as providing accommodation at the house for the judges, helpers and me. Sir Michael is also a senior ‘A’ panel judge for HPRs. Alpha Feeds and Sporting Rifle should also be applauded for supporting this event as it was the first of its kind to be run in the United Kingdom. The concept behind the test was to try and incorporate a series of the UK and Continental type disciplines in one event. This entailed a quartering test, a blood tracking test, the first of its kind in the UK, a three minute swim in a river, once gain not done in the UK before and a number of others. The teams who took part in the end were England(the winners), Wales, Ireland Holland and Germany, a team from Slovakia were also invited but unfortunately had to withdraw a week before as one of their members was ill and had to go hospitable which was a shame. The dogs which took part were German Shorthaired pointers, German Wirehaired pointers, Weimaraner, both short and Longhaired, Slovakian Rough haired pointers and a team of Dutch Partridge dogs representing Holland. These on first appearance resembled English Springer Spaniels but on a closer look were very different.However I am now going to concentrate on the blood trail/track part of the competition. This was spread over two days to enable specta
