And the great thing about Lincolnshire is that it’s so wild, as Alistair Macgregor finds outIf you are sitting reading this in London or Birmingham or, best of all, Hull, you could stand up, walk out the door and be stalking within hours. The Wiggins-Davieses’ Revesby estate in Lincolnshire has lots of stalking to offer and lets you get on with it. It’s less than an hour from Hull, two-and-a-half hours from Birmingham and – how about this? – take the train from London Kings Cross to Grantham (one-and-a-quarter hours), get picked up by Alex Wiggins-Davies, drive to Revesby 45 minutes away and you could be walking through his woods with the estate’s Sako .243 in under three hours.Revesby started letting deerstalking two years ago, mainly to Dutch people. Now it has a stalker or two through once a fortnight. It has fallow, muntjac and a handful of roe. Alex allows shooting of fallow and any muntjac that’s not a doe with young. However, Alex is not allowing the roe deer shot until he sees them in more numbers.Shirewood is the best place to be. A slow stalk round this 85-acre block of mixed broadleaf and conifer woodland will take you about five hours. The wood is in a sea of arable land where the deer go to bask and browse in the sunlight. The northern end of the wood is mainly broadleaf, including some ancient woodland and it has marshy areas. This attracts the bulk of the fallow population. The conifers to the south are home to the muntjac.Wherever you go in Revesby’s woodlands, you will be struck by the amount of deer traffic. The muntjac have carved paths in the earth which are pattered with their feet. Larger paths have the slots of the fallow. “The muntjac let you get to within 100 yards but then they don’t like it,” says Alex.There are 540 acres of woodland on the estate out of a total of

Charlie Jacoby finds out what they do with their roe deerUntil I stepped on the mortar bomb, I reckoned I was in a roe stalkers’ paradise. It is a 33,000-acre estate in Wiltshire where hardly anyone goes. Deer are healthy, you will see them regularly as you stalk. The trouble is the high explosives. Happily, this one was a blank. These are the Army ranges on Salisbury Plain.“Don’t touch it,” said Steve Alexander as I bent down to examine it. “That really is the golden rule here,” he continued. “Don’t touch the ordnance.”The bangs don’t drive away the deer. There are hulks of old tanks and troop carriers that the army artillery aims at, so the shelling areas are concentrated. But it is not safe for stalkers to go there except, that is, for the group in Defence Estates charged with managing the deer population on the MoD’s land. They are allowed out during gaps in the shelling.Steve manages the deerstalking on this vast centre of Salisbury Plain. The whole Plain extends to nearly 100,000 acres. Its northern half holds the two Live Impact Areas where the bulk of the deer live. The southern half has the Dry Training Areas and so more disturbance from troop movements.Almost all the deer in the centre are roe. There are occasional muntjac or transit fallow. Muntjac are now creeping in to the western edge of the Plain and both fallow and muntjac are established on the eastern edge.What a wonderful opportunity for officers to enjoy some free jolly old stalking, you might think. But it is not like that. Steve’s job is serious deer management. He enjoys his stalking and he does the job for free but each year he has to come up with a management plan for the Plain based on a census carried out by up to 40 volunteers. He has a pool of stalkers, all qualified to DSC1 or higher, drawn from all ranks of all services and from the MoD Civil
