I was only a little chap and the rifle seemed huge, in order to line up the sights the stock had to either be rested on my shoulder or tucked underneath my arm, not ideal but I spent many happy and exciting hours wandering through the local fields shooting at but not connecting with the many rabbits that occupied the red soil. Now, sadly long buried under the inevitable creeping cancer of development. I do seem to remember shooting the odd sparrow and probably other now protected species.Then on my tenth birthday, my Grandmother for some reason known only to her gave me a 177 BSA Cadet air rifle. No PCP this, such things did not exist in those far off days. I remember all too clearly hanging a cotton reel on the fence and with the third or fourth shot scored a direct hit, excellent, except for the fact that the resulting ricochet cracked the lounge window!
