High in the Alps in the heart of chamois hunting, the Swiss have put on a beautifully organised exhibition about their sport, showing off all the Swiss national characteristics of tidiness and presentation.It explains all aspects of hunting in the Alps, including guns, cartridges, dog breeding and work, the importance of safety, of wildlife management and its value to the rural economy – all the stuff our fieldsports organisations struggle bravely to put across. And yet this is put on in a town hall.That’s not all. Where a British fieldsports exhibition would attempt to lie to the public with, for example, a no-blood rule, or a veil drawn over big game hunting or even an overstressing of the conservation aspects of hunting and playing down the excitement of our sport, this exhibition is courteous enough to let the viewer make up his or her own mind. And to drive home that difference, it includes every Alpine bird and mammal, shot or trapped, stuffed and prettily presented in glass cases with chocolate-box backdrops. There’s the bear (Ursus arctos) shot in the next door village in 1867 and an example of the wolf, which still lives locally. Rare woodpeckers, capercailllie, eagles, two hoopoe – they are all there. If you doubt the hunters’ commitment to conservation, there are helpful, professionally-designed panels (in Italian) showing population distribution. There are strips of animal hide, so children can feel the texture of different furs. A DVD about hunting plays in a room that includes 18pt stag’s antlers on the wall. There is even a two-headed, six-legged goat kid in a glass case. Incredibly, the whole show is packed into four rooms.In the UK, the fieldsports organisations putting on an exhibition such as this would shun many of these images. They tell Charlie Jacoby what’s different and what’s the same about ‘estate’ stalking in their two countriesA New Zealand elk is huge. Its bodyweight is twice that of the big red stags on the Derbyshire estate where Neville is now hunting. “Comparing elk to red deer is like comparing elephants to caribou,” says Neville. “The first time a hunter walks up to the elk he or she has shot, it’s always the size that amazes.”Neville has bred three of the biggest elk under the SCI scoring system. A big head in the 1970s when he started would score 300+ points. One of Neville’s elk was the first to break the 500 barrier. With it, he won an international competition in the USA in 2000. Neville has hunted big game all over the world but, until now, not in the UK. He came to England in August to meet his British agent Rob Aiken, who offers Neville’s yee-haa-style shooting the South Pacific big five – elk, huge red stags, fallow, Himalayan tahr and chamois in New Zealand – as well as his own, more sedate roe stalking in Scotland and genteel park fallow and reds on a large walled estate near his home in Derbyshire. Together, they are stalking the fallow of the Derbyshire estate.Neville’s shooting also takes place within a perimeter fence. Part of the reason is that the New Zealand Government is trying to contain the populations of exotics that Neville offers. However, while Rob’s walled estate is big at 2,500 acres with 12,000 acres of extra land containing deer in pockets of forestry, Neville’s fenced area of 6,000 acres and his 70,000-acre concession, both on remote Mt Cook are colossal. The thing about Tom Garner’s job is that it is almost all shooting, as Alistair Macgregor finds outImagine a job where you have to go stalking every morning and where the pressure is on to shoot foxes, rabbits and squirrels when you are not stalking. It’s the perfect job for a Sporting Rifle reader, surely.This is the day to day reality for Tom Garner, Estate Ranger for the Clinton Devon Estates in East Devon, where he is responsible for the management of wild deer, control of vermin and is part-time keeper on the owner’s shoot.It’s a family business with a professional management team running nearly 25,000 acres, most of it around Exmouth and Beer on the East Devon coast. There are home farms in hand, which have just gone organic – but much of the farming is let. There is one shoot with a fulltime keeper on the southern part of the estate and the other shoots on the tenant farms are part-time keepered.Tom took over three years ago from an estate ranger who had been at Clinton Devon Estates for 35 years. Tom’s arrival coincided with the Estate investing in its deer management operations with a purpose built chiller and handling facility, development of direct venison sales and conducted stalking.They are all roe deer here. The ground varies so much on the huge acreage that Tom gets all kinds, from woodland deer, through seaside deer to field deer that hide out in Devon’s’ big hedges. There are hills on the estate with gorse moorland on top and there is seven miles of the River Otter. There are farms on the estate that do livestock and others that specialise in arable.Cull numbers are agreed with the Estates Woodland Manager and are based on regular monitoring of browsing impacts within the Estates woodlands. “I hold the Forestry Commission as the leading light in deer management,” says Tom. “The way we do things here takes a lot fr
