Britain has all the best roebuck but the Germans have the best traditions and techniques for shooting them. Admittedly, they do their traditions with the kind of tweeness and attention to detail that ends inevitably in fascism but we have plenty to learn from them.The German ammunition company RUAG, which sells Norma and RWS cartridges among others, keeps a 2,500ha hunting area near its southern German factory. I went there in a party of four English stalkers to shoot roebucks from highseats and stalked along woodland rides. RUAG employs jaegers (stalkers) here to take its own staff and guests out to shoot roe deer. It takes around 150 roe off the mainly wooded areas on the hunting ground, including 40-45 bucks. It also takes 40-45 wild boar a year, including half a dozen keiler (full-grown males). It also sponsors general wildlife management in the district, including dealing with the 20-30 deer RTAs per year on roads through the area.Unlike the UK, where you might expect him to come with triple shooting sticks, RUAG stalker Josef Naegelein carries a fold-up camping stool, a single height-adjustable thumbstick and a cushion with a strap. He and client stalk carefully to a position in the woodland where he reckons there is a good chance of a buck. There he puts out the stool for the shooter to sit on and plants the thumbstick for the shooter to use as a rifle rest. He also issues anti-midge stuff. Then it’s a question of waiting. Every 15 minutes, he will use his Buttolo call to give three or four roe kid peeps. He scans the area with Zeiss 10x56 binoculars.As well as his job as jaeger, Josef is a local carpenter and made many of the 50 highseats on the 2,500ha ground. For the highseat work, he has the cushion which, sensibly, he sits on himself.

Charlie Jacoby heads to the beautiful Cumbrian Lake District to meet professional foxshooter Keith VarleyIt’s a tall order. It’s August – normally Keith Varley’s downtime, when he doesn’t do much foxing. Now I want him to find me a fox and shoot it.We’re in the Duddon Valley in the Cumbrian lake district where foxes have plenty of places to hide. The bracken is high, the trees are in leaf and fox numbers were heavily thinned earlier in the year.Keith hooks up with his friend Eric Morrison and we set out at night to walk the fells with a lamp. In the daytime in this beautiful country, you see plenty of ramblers dressed in state-of the-art walking boots, thermal cagouls and carrying aluminium sticks. It would be interesting to see them attempting their high fell walks in the black cold night. But now Keith, Eric and Keith’s son Stephen are in their element. This is their passion.Keith’s foxing year starts in September, when he is terrierman for local fell packs. These footpacks do “control” days for Cumbrian sheep farmers with two hounds to guns. Keith is also widely used by shoots, which phone him when they have foxes taking their pheasants.In March, Keith heads north to Argyllshire, where a group of 30 local farmers and forestry concerns pays him to spend nine weeks clearing out foxes. He has been doing this job for the last 16 years and his son Stephen has come up to help him for the last three. “I get a fixed fee – it’s a nice earner – and I usually get a bonus,” he says.The same Argyllshire farms has run this system for more than a century. Keith’s predecessor was a local gamekeeper, who was on call all year round. “There are a few cooperatives like this,” he says.Argyllshire is fox heaven. Organiser Nicholas Elder talks up the good bits about the weekendHeld in September on the beautiful Shropshire estate Loton Park of Sir Michael Leighton Bt, Discover HPRs suffered poor organisation but nothing that cannot be improved. Sir Michael has owned and worked German short haired pointers for more than 30 years and is currently looking at large munsterlanders. As an HPR enthusiast, he was an ideal host as he allowed the whole of his estate to be used for the event as well as providing accommodation at the house for the judges, helpers and me. Sir Michael is also a senior ‘A’ panel judge for HPRs. Alpha Feeds and Sporting Rifle should also be applauded for supporting this event as it was the first of its kind to be run in the United Kingdom. The concept behind the test was to try and incorporate a series of the UK and Continental type disciplines in one event. This entailed a quartering test, a blood tracking test, the first of its kind in the UK, a three minute swim in a river, once gain not done in the UK before and a number of others. The teams who took part in the end were England(the winners), Wales, Ireland Holland and Germany, a team from Slovakia were also invited but unfortunately had to withdraw a week before as one of their members was ill and had to go hospitable which was a shame. The dogs which took part were German Shorthaired pointers, German Wirehaired pointers, Weimaraner, both short and Longhaired, Slovakian Rough haired pointers and a team of Dutch Partridge dogs representing Holland. These on first appearance resembled English Springer Spaniels but on a closer look were very different.However I am now going to concentrate on the blood trail/track part of the competition. This was spread over two days to enable

The few roads there are don't follow the valleys and most of the signposts, local folk reckon, are still off being melted down to be made into Spitfires.There are some big shoots there but Saturdays are characterised by numerous small farmer syndicates and family days out. One such shoot is Bathealton Court. Until this season, it was a family shoot providing 30-bird days five times a season. Part-time keeper Nathan Hards would put down and bring on 300 birds every season. The estate changed hands recently and the new owners, both keen shooters, have stepped Nathan's work up a gear to give nine days a season of 100+ with two or three rough days.Bathealton still maintains its relaxed family atmosphere. However, Nathan now has his work cut out.To do that work, Nathan has been thinking more carefully about his kit and his methods. What he worked out is not good news for rimfire shooters. There is plenty of the kind of quarry here that rimfire aficionados are used to shooting - such as rabbits and crows - but there are better ways to get into this kind of pest. He will use a .22LR but he has found that, in this kind of country, characterised by streams among small but steep hills and patches of woodland on both the tops and the bottoms, the most effective methods are his .222 foxing rifle, traps and his shotgun.Nathan is no stranger to rifle shooting. Charlie Jacoby joins a party of shooters on the BASC deer management scheme on ArranFor his brother Stuart’s birthday, Toby Wilson gave him £350-worth of red stag stalking in Scotland. Go to a posh estate and that will buy you as little as a day and a cull knobber. Go on the BASC deer management scheme on the island of Arran and that buys you a whole week’s stalking with an unlimited bag limit of some of the most impressive heads in Scotland. And no trophy fees.Arran is the rugby ball-shaped island off Ayrshire. Dubbed “the Highlands in miniature” land here rises from sea level to XXXft Goatfell. It can be tough stalking.BASC leases the sporting rights on the 27,500-acre Forestry Commission land on Arran, which holds around 500 beasts. There are two other large estates on Arran which between them hold 1,700 beasts on open land: Dougreay (Sp?) owned by XXXX and Arran Estates owned by Charlie Forbes (CHECK THIS?). This year, BASC members have to cull 135 of its population, with resident ranger Forestry Commission ranger Bob Logan taking another 15 off Goatfell. The other two estates take around 280 off their land. The island is characterised by the amount of deer fencing protecting everything from large estates to vegetable plots.Bob and Neil Griffiths are BASC’s team on the island, running the programme with radios and mobile phones, driving round and round the island and bringing carcases off the hill on quad bike trailers.BASC runs XX weeks a year for up to16 of its members at a time. They share 25 beats, all of which include land from low woodland to high hill so whatever the cloudbase, you can find somewhere to shoot.Although there is no bag limit, BASC has never had to tell a stalking pair to stop shooting. “In many cases the weather beats the stalkers before the weather beats the deer,” says BASC deer officer Alan McCor

Organiser Nicholas Elder talks up the good bits about the weekendHeld in September on the beautiful Shropshire estate Loton Park of Sir Michael Leighton Bt, Discover HPRs suffered poor organisation but nothing that cannot be improved. Sir Michael has owned and worked German short haired pointers for more than 30 years and is currently looking at large munsterlanders. As an HPR enthusiast, he was an ideal host as he allowed the whole of his estate to be used for the event as well as providing accommodation at the house for the judges, helpers and me. Sir Michael is also a senior ‘A’ panel judge for HPRs. Alpha Feeds and Sporting Rifle should also be applauded for supporting this event as it was the first of its kind to be run in the United Kingdom. The concept behind the test was to try and incorporate a series of the UK and Continental type disciplines in one event. This entailed a quartering test, a blood tracking test, the first of its kind in the UK, a three minute swim in a river, once gain not done in the UK before and a number of others. The teams who took part in the end were England(the winners), Wales, Ireland Holland and Germany, a team from Slovakia were also invited but unfortunately had to withdraw a week before as one of their members was ill and had to go hospitable which was a shame.
