These are carried in a slim pole bag bought from Attleborough Accessories. The bag also has a pouch for the rolled up nets. You can pick from an array of nets with patterns to suit all seasons. Advantage Timber for woodland and Max 4 for grassland, Realtree Hardwoods for the autumn copse and Hardwoods Green for the summer and spring treeline. We’re spoiled for choice. I have a growing collection of nets and blinds to suit all occasions. Packed into the bag, four poles and two nets weigh no more than my rifle. They can be set up in minutes. Likewise, if you’ve picked the wrong spot, they can be dismantled and moved quickly. Sure, they don’t have a ceiling .. but you just need to set up with a thick canopy overhead and a dark background behind you. There’s a special name for this. It’s called a “wood”. Don’t think though, that you have to carry net poles. I sometimes pack a net into the game-bag and simply drape it over a fence or a gate when ambushing rabbits. A point he made was to use it sparingly. A few squeaks of a rabbit here and there is more realistic for a fox than a rabbit squeak going on and on. The digital caller comes with chips loaded with sounds. It did not have, I noticed, the mewing of a vulnerable kitten.Surveying the farmyard where there were cats, chickens, duck and all of it a potential feast to a fearless fox, I reckoned the predator could only come through one of two gates. The wind was wrong for one of them, so I followed the fox’s future path back out into the field from whence it would come. There was another gateway on the other wide of the field and covering both it and the farmyard gate was a perfect thorny corner. I’m a great fan of these. I use my pigeon hide kit but I use the camo net to make a roof as well as a wall to take the sun off my face. Having set up the digital foxcaller, built the hide and put the stool and dog inside it, it was a question of waiting. And waiting. And waiting.It took two hours, during which time the pheasants went noisily to bed, the thin winter sun ducked behind the hedgerows then sat sulkily for 30 minutes, I could hear the poultry being shut up, I could see two cats scouring the hedges for rabbits (leave some for me) and a bat flitted over head. It’s December – shouldn’t they be hibernating?As the fox slipped through the gate in front of me, I leveled the M03 and silently cocked it. The first shot was a definite hit but the fox bolted forward, then slowed. It took a couple of seconds to work the bolt and send another round in as a safety shot. Mike and Shirley Atkins have an airgun range behind their house, a minibus and a centrefire range up in the hills where they live in Rhayader, Mid Wales. They run the Mid Wales Rifle Club and hold basic firearms courses for anyone who has never tried shooting rifles before.They have 35 years of shooting experience each. Mike developed a course 2 1/2 years ago. In February last year he held a seminar with representatives of most Welsh police forces. Their input resulted in the course today. Mike is expecting people in their hundreds every year to do the course. So far, they have been coming from as far as Edinburgh, Essex and Exeter. A lot of people come in pairs - a husband and wife or father and son. This is the only LANTRA-accredited basic rifle course. Maximum course size is six. In addition, the Atkins have just won a Clubmark award, the British Standard for clubs with junior sections.Based on the format of the NRA range officers course, this course covers firearms law, safety and security, rifles and ammunition, hazard perception, accessories, sighting systems and the anatomy of a rifle. This last part of it was suggested by a firearms officer. MWRC sends you a 32-page ringbound book two weeks before your course starts.Mike starts with firearms law and warns that “this is the part that sends people to sleep”. However, he is on his firmest ground here because Mike’s other job is as a lawyer. “The law is the hardest part, and it's the one even the firearms officers found hardest,” he says. “But it is against the law that your actions will be charged.”Most firearms law is badly drafted.
