Go on the BASC deer management scheme on the island of Arran and that buys you a whole week’s stalking with an unlimited bag limit of some of the most impressive heads in Scotland. And no trophy fees.Arran is the rugby ball-shaped island off Ayrshire. Dubbed “the Highlands in miniature” land here rises from sea level to XXXft Goatfell. It can be tough stalking.BASC leases the sporting rights on the 27,500-acre Forestry Commission land on Arran, which holds around 500 beasts. There are two other large estates on Arran which between them hold 1,700 beasts on open land: Dougreay (Sp?) owned by XXXX and Arran Estates owned by Charlie Forbes (CHECK THIS?). This year, BASC members have to cull 135 of its population, with resident ranger Forestry Commission ranger Bob Logan taking another 15 off Goatfell. The other two estates take around 280 off their land. The island is characterised by the amount of deer fencing protecting everything from large estates to vegetable plots.Bob and Neil Griffiths are BASC’s team on the island, running the programme with radios and mobile phones, driving round and round the island and bringing carcases off the hill on quad bike trailers.BASC runs XX weeks a year for up to16 of its members at a time. I was only a little chap and the rifle seemed huge, in order to line up the sights the stock had to either be rested on my shoulder or tucked underneath my arm, not ideal but I spent many happy and exciting hours wandering through the local fields shooting at but not connecting with the many rabbits that occupied the red soil. Now, sadly long buried under the inevitable creeping cancer of development. I do seem to remember shooting the odd sparrow and probably other now protected species.Then on my tenth birthday, my Grandmother for some reason known only to her gave me a 177 BSA Cadet air rifle. No PCP this, such things did not exist in those far off days. I remember all too clearly hanging a cotton reel on the fence and with the third or fourth shot scored a direct hit, excellent, except for the fact that the resulting ricochet cracked the lounge window! That’s where Andrew Phillips does his stalking – and that’s where his client wants to be today.Stalking with Andrew is Babac Amozandeh – ‘Bob’ for short – who grew up in Iran. His father was in the military under the Shah and Bob learned his shooting there. He now lives in the North-West of England.One of the reasons Sporting Rifle has come along is to see Bob’s rifle in action. It is a little-known make from the USA. He is using a lightweight Kimber .308 with a Hakko Majesty 6x42 scope. Kimber makes pistols and a wide variety of rifles, including the 84M Montana, which weighs just 5lb 2oz, a number of varminters, including extremely heavy barrelled versions and tactical arms for the police. Kimber’s factory is in New York. One of the company’s boasts is that only raw material goes in through the gates – no parts of a Kimber rifle are contracted out.Fox Firearms is the make’s UK distributor, as well as distributing rifles by Cooper Arms Of Montana, Keppeler target rifles and Hakko scopes. Brian Fox had one shipment from Kimber in 2007 and he is waiting for the second shipment. Among rifles Brian has on order include a lightweight rifles for deerstalkers and those heavy-barrelled varminters for foxers.Bob normally uses a Sako .243 with a Swarovski 2-12x50. For his new rifle, he has stuck with Sako ammunition.
